 President's Message

May 2018 President’s Message

Hello, Fisherpeople!

The striped bass are starting to trickle in. A few more days of nice warm weather might be what the doctor ordered.

The May 23rd meeting was originally scheduled to be just a tackle show with no speaking. However, because of the three speakers last month and the importance of their topics, we are going to have a short meeting with Capt. Jim Luce addressing us again. We have filled six Capt. Bob Luce Memorial trips so far, and the two women’s trips donated by Capt. Jim for the Barbara Luce Memorial have been filled. If you did not get on a Capt. Bob Memorial trip yet, send an email to Ed Burke at thornburkes@aol.com, and we will offer a couple of additional dates at the meeting on the 23rd. Randall Sherman, our vice-president wants to address the membership  regarding the foundation at the May meeting.

If you want to have a table to sell your gear on May 23, email me. This would be preferable to just bringing things in without our knowing how many and who will be displaying. It would be great if Mike Hunter, Joe O’Clair,  and Bob Davies could set up.

As you know, we recently had our Salties Haddock Trip on the Capt. John. I know everyone around me did fairly well, and the people down the sides and in the back also reported having done well. We had Veronica Misiewicz Sanford as the high hook, with a nice looking 27” haddock winning the pool. Congratulations, Veronica!

The Salties Fluke Trip scheduled for July 19 is over half full. If you are interested, get your application in to Ken Whiting as soon as possible to guarantee your spot.

I was recently contacted by Bob Lewis, president of the Cape Cod Flyrodders and past president of the Osterville Anglers, who asked if we would be interested in joining five clubs working together in a Cape Derby for the month of June, which would consist of photos of any type of fish being released. This contest is in conjunction with an organization called Keepemwet Fishing. I told Bob that we run several catch and release programs during the year, and we would love to be involved in any program interested in conserving the welfare of the fishery.

Ron Rodriques, chairman of the June 2 and 3 In-house Derby, wants to get more people to sign up as soon as possible, or he will call the tournament off. Check out the info on our webpage under Events.

In closing, I have to tell you that Veronica, the haddock winner, is also scheduled to go on the fluke trip. So I suggest that all of us fishermen work hard on our skills and our catching between now and then!

Thanks, and hold tight!

Environmental Affairs
Earth Day Canal Clean-up
The Cape Cod Salties  participated in this years Earth Day Canal Clean-up. Not only did they do a great job cleaning up the side of the canal but there were also educational and fun things to do as well. As you can see from the faces on this motley crew, fun was had by all.

Kayak Cleanup
The Kayak Cleanup is coming Sunday May 27th at Herring River in Harwich. It would be great to have some of the club members participate in this event. If you are interested in participating in this event please contact Tom Planert at fredricplanert@aol.com. He will be able to give you the meeting locations and keep you informed if the event changes.

Spring Haddock Trip
The Salties had their annual Spring Haddock Trip on May 4th. To say everyone had a great time would be an understatement. We had good weather, flat seas, great company and plenty of fish. We even got to see some whales and dolphins.

And here is Mike Hubbard with a nice group of haddock.

Fly of the Month
The Woolly-Burger started making its appearance around 1965-67 as a fresh water insect fly.  Some of the "old fly patterns"  are still the best and continue to produce fish.  Fifty plus years later this fly is still in demand and producing fish in many of the ponds and lakes on Cape Cod.

Book Report Suggestion
Last month we didn't get any book reports but if you have read something interesting that you thing the rest of the club would benefit as well please let us know. Also, if you have a good recipe that would work too.
April Meeting Speakers
Last months meeting had a very full agenda. First was Rear Admiral Bruce Brady from the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Chatham. He went over the importance of having all the correct safety gear while out on the water. He explained how they go through the Coast Guard inspections of vessels to make sure you have the proper gear with you just incase the worst happens. He also went over the day to day activities of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. How they do everything from assist in search and rescue missions to reporting on poachers. He also brought along with him full time Coast Guard Petty Officer Contraris who explained some of the other duties of the Coast Guard up to and including law enforcement.

Next out the box was Captain Parket. Captain Parket is the only full time recreational fisheries advocate north of Florida. He was also an constant contributor for On the Water Magazine. He is advocating for Anglers for Offshore Wind. He explained the importance of offshore wind power as well as how the structures for these turbines have been and will be beneficial to the fishery by becoming an artificial reef of sort.

Last but far from least was Captain Jim Luce. Captain Luce went over all the particulars for the Captain Bob Luce Memorial tournament. This year so far he has 6 trips scheduled in June and July as well as two women only trips to memorialize his mother as well. At current I believe all the men's trips are full but as you can see from the Presidents Message above there is a contact to see if all the trips are full as well as the addition of any other trips.
