May 2016 President's Message
May 2016 President’s Message
This month’s message will be short. From the fishing side, Fran Miller has gotten a lot of squid and scup straight out of Bass River. Lou Mackeil has gotten stripers on West Dennis Beach. The Davies boys have gotten stripers at several “secret” locations, using Bob’s fabulous custom-made lures. Joe O’Clair got a good-sized striper on his fly rod off his dock at Wilbur Park. Keith Ritchie got some bass inside Barnstable Harbor. Keith, Jay Pavick, and I have gotten a large number of bass in the Bass River. Most of the fish were small, but I know of at least four keepers. The May meeting on May 25 is our first fish supper of the year. Don’t forget that these meals for $5.00 are always a great deal, and for another $5.00, you can be in the 50/50 raffle. You have to get your reservations in if you want to attend, so we can order the food. The application is on our website at capecodsalties.org. If you have not yet signed up to be a volunteer that night, you can still email me to do so. We welcome volunteers! Chairman Jay Serijan did a great job with the annual Wives & Sweethearts Dinner this past Saturday at the Yarmouth House. Every woman there received a gift certificate and other gifts. If you see Jay, thank him for doing a fantastic job! Finally, on the Capt. Bob Luce Memorial Derby, Bill Cottle has a couple of openings on June 7, and I have one for July 8. If interested, contact Bill or myself. Thanks, and hold tight! Jack ( jecreighton45@gmail.com, 508 394-2983)

Marine Fisheries Sportfish Angler Data Collection Team
Kimberly Trull, a Marine Biologist with the Mass Division of Marine Fisheries, updated the Salties at the April meeting on the Scale Collection volunteer project.
In 2002 Marine Fisheries initiated the SADCT (Sportfish Angler Data Collection Team) program to increase the information provided to ASMFC (Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission), in an effort to help manage and conserve the Striped Bass population. Due to the success of the program, in 2013 the program expanded to include Black Sea Bass, Fluke, and Scup. Combined, these four species have an enormous economic value to our region. This value has been calculated at $700M recreationally and about $8M commercially. (Note how much more value these fish are from a sportfish perspective vs a fish product perspective). Kimberly reviewed the life cycle of each species, how to collect the scales, how to get the scales to her, and outlined how to officially participate. A sign-up sheet was passed around at the meeting for new participants to join the project. Check with Jack Creightion for details on how to reach her.
