April 2016 Newsletter

April 2016 President's Message

April 2016 President’s Message
April is here, and so are the herring! Water temperatures are in the low 40’s. If we can get this up by ten degrees, the stripers that are being caught today in New Jersey will be here.

At last month’s meeting, Ryan Collins did a great job on My Fishing Cape Cod, and I wish I could have walked the 26 miles with him. This month’s meeting onApril 27 will feature Captain Bob Hovey of USCG talking about Safety and Rescue, and Off Shore Tuna.

The Annual Awards Banquet held at the beginning of March was a great success, and with 94 members attending, it was as good a crowd as we’ve had in recent years. With the great support from membership and all the tackle shops on the Cape, we made enough money to fund all the contributions that we make annually. Special thanks to all of you who helped with the gathering of prizes and working the day of the function. The 94 people who were there know who you are. Special thanks to Terry Tessein and Bill Dulude for securing prizes, Joe O’Clair and Steve Israelian for the menu and location, and to Sue and Kent Dumont, who handled the finances for the evening and then put together an excellent book afterwards showing the bid sheets and all other financial information.

The Captain Bob Luce Memorial presently has seven groups of six fishermen each in contention for the award. If you want to be on a team or start your own team of six, see below in the newsletter or reach out to Terry Tessein.

Over the weekend, members Vinny Foti and Steve Unsworth contacted me regarding the Unmanaged Forage Amendment. After discussing this with the Board of Directors, I sent an email on the issue to Julia Beaty of the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council.

If you have not seen it, the Association to Preserve Cape Cod features Cape Cod Saltie Rick Cain on the cover of their quarterly magazine Shore Lines. Rick is shown testing the temperature of the water at Long Pond in Yarmouth during his herring run counting training. Over several days in April, under the direction of Randall Sherman, the herring run from Swan Pond to Long Pond was cleaned of trees and other obstacles to make the migration of the herring easier. A few folks are making a lot of folks look good. This is a great way to get involved in your club.

In closing, forgive the repetition, but if anyone is interested in the vice-presidency, please give ma a call ASAP so we can discuss what it entails. According to the by-laws, I am done at the December meeting, so it’s important that we have someone lined up.

Thanks, and hold tight!

The Herring are beginning their 2016 spawning migration; and a group of Salties met with the Yarmouth Department of Natural Resources to organize and participate in the Long Pond Herring Run Count. The group consists of Bruce MacLeod, Randall Sherman, Ed Janiunas, Frank Ruel, Fred Good, Jack Creighton, Jay Pavick, Joe Apiscopa, Ken Whiting, Ken Dumont, Ray Castano, Rick Cain, and Steve Israelian. Over two hundred have been counted since March 11.

Most of the team gather at the Long Pond fish Ladder for some final instructions from a Yarmouth Department of Natural Resources Officer.

2016 Bound Brook Herring Run Clean-out
Cold, wind, and rain did not prevent a group of Salties from helping to ease the way for the Herring as they make their way to Bound Brook in Dennis. The Salties team consisted of Fred Good, Rick Stec, and Jay Pavick; and they were joined with a team of AmeriCorps volunteers.

2016 Long Pond Herring Run Clean-out
On Saturday, April 9,11 members of the CC Salties and 3 members from Yarmouth DNR finished the cleanup of the Yarmouth Herring Run from Swan Pond to Long Pond using rakes, clam rakes, bush cutters, chainsaws and plenty of hard work.  This was one of our best turnouts in recent years on this project that we have been doing for about a decade on this run.  We have also worked on the Bound Brook and Scargo Herring runs in Dennis for more years than that. This is in addition to 5 members who started the project on Monday April 4. On the Saturday session, as we walked out and the water began to clear, herring where seen swimming by with over 100 of them seen in the holding pool below the final fish ladder into Long Pond.

Participating in the Day 2 effort were Ken Whiting, Douglas Dockery, Derek Barber, C. Randall Sherman, Ray Castano, Ed Janiunas, Bruce Macloud, Jack Creighton, Richard Stec, Ken Creigton, and Jay Pavick (taking the picture),

March Meeting Speaker

Ryan Collins - My Fishing Cape Cod

Ryan Collins, founder and developer of the Website My Fishing Cape Cod, continuously enhances the site with workshops, fishing trip reports, and recently with a documentary of a two day trek taking him twenty seven mil
es fishing the great back beaches of Cape Cod; and this was the subject of his presentation. In September of 2015, Ryan began at Nauset Inlet and he ended at Race Point. Making the trip more challenging, was the fact that he not only fished day and night; but camped on the beaches as he progressed. For lures, he relied primarily on a Magic Swimmer, Pencil Popper, and a Needle Fish. Rod and reel consisted of a Lamiglas 10 foot one-piece and a Shimano Ultegra 10000. At the outset, after spending a bit of time fishing with his friend Garet Suomala, Ryan made early stops at Coast Guard Beach, and Marconi.Beach with little action but a school of Peanut Bunker and the antics of the never ending line of seals. At Lecount Hollow, in Welfleet, the heat was intense. Hot temperatures and little to no wind was the theme throughout most of the trip. Progressing through Ballston Beach and Head of the Meadow Beach, Ryan was greeted by a pack of coyotes, which made camping a night of vigil as opposed to sleep. At High Head Beach, a small pod of Stripers ventured close to shore but were picky. Finally reaching Race Point, the weather changed with a strong on shore wind; and on the last day of the trip, a nice keeper was landed from the surf. Ryan's 'never give up' motto brought the trip to a happy conclusion.
The entire event took place over 40 hours. 40 hours of fishing, reflection, and communing with the weather and the wildlife, It would have ended on a high note no matter what the fish count was; but it sure helped to catch that keeper.

Monthly Meeting Workshop - Environmental Awareness

March's Discussion:

River Herring and Elver Enforcement

Sargent Clayton, from the Massachusetts Environmental Police updated the Salties on efforts to control the illegal taking of River Herring and Elvers (immature eels). His past experience in the National Seashore Service as a Park Ranger has given him a strong familiarity with the Cape Cod geography and ecology. This has assisted him in his monitoring efforts used in Herring and Elver enforcement. Since the commercial value of Elvers to the Sushi industry is so high (around $2500.00 a pound), enforcement efforts are more active for eels than herring.
The state of Maine has a legal season for elver taking; and when that supply begins to decrease, poachers from that area begin to 'expand' their efforts to our streams, here on Cape Cod. Sgt. Clayton solicited our help in notifying the Environmental Police at 800-632-8075. Yellow flags are Maine license plates and active aerators in the locale of streams flowing from ponds or lakes.
