June 2016 President's Message
Ninety people attended the May meeting/fish supper, and the kitchen crew did another fabulous job putting out the best $5.00 supper on Cape Cod! Terry Tessein introduced speakers from the Environmental Police and NOAA, and we also had speakers from the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies on the subject of entanglements. This is the first time we have had speakers at a supper that I can recall. I personally thought it was informative. You should let me know your feelings on whether it was worthwhile. I really welcome your feedback so we know how to proceed in the future.
Earlier on that same day, a group of our members had gone out on the Capt. John and limited out on pollock and other ground fish. See Kent Dumont, John Sorcenelli, or Howard Mulhern for details.
On June 2nd, a group of us went out on the Bad Influence with Capt. Jeff Viamari, and we all got keeper bass in the 36” area, with Kenny Whiting getting a nice 39” fish.
On June 7, the Capt. Bob Luce Memorial started, and six of us caught about thirty large bluefish, with 87 year old Joe Branzetti getting the largest, at 36”, a monster fish! You can see a video of this trip and the big catch by googling. It will take you to a Facebook page, but you do not need a Facebook account to see that one page.
Bob and Steve Davies caught some nice keeper bass in the canal, and Jay Pavick got a nice 37” fish there, too.
Jay Walpole has been sneaking out to the tire reef in Bass River and getting his catch of black sea bass, with Jay Pavick and John Sorcenelli with him. Bruce Brady and Steve Israelian got several striped bass Saturday outside of Barnstable Harbor.
Club members do get lots of information on fish that are caught in or around the Cape. All the names listed have recently caught fish and are a great resource for putting you in the right place at the right time. If you are looking to go with someone, that’s a list of names to start with. Contact other members to get on the water. The Capt. Luce In House derby goes until July 16. Ask a member to go out with you and start a group of your own.
I have to say that if you want to take advantage of the opportunity of a sunrise out of the water in the morning, the smash of a fish on a surface plug, a sea bass on a jig on the bottom, or a striped bass taking your fly, there is no better time than we are presently enjoying. When I started this column, I spoke about the May supper. These social events are a big part of the club, but for a Saltie enjoying the fishing element, this is the best time. Oh, and did I tell you that Saturday night everyone and their brother and sister were catching big bluefish on West Dennis Beach on our own Bob Davies plugs?? So, get out there and enjoy it!
If you want to get out on a trip, I highly recommend Capt. Jeff Viamari on the Bad Influence and Capt. Jim Luce on the Striper. Both are members of our club and donated trips at our Awards Banquet.
Thanks, and hold tight!
