June 2015 News and Info

A Tale of Two Fishing Trips

Thursday, June 4 began with a Breaking Tide on the Canal. This novice fished the East end starting at 4AM. Sunrise was 5:08AM. Just about day break, there was a flurry of activity of rising fish mid canal. However, expected more activity during a highlighted tide in June on the Cape Cod Canal. Tried several lures: a Needlefish, a Bob Davies Plug, Bucktail (although light weight), a Sebile Magic Swimmer, and a white Ronz plastic. Had one lighthearted hit on the Sebile. Saw only two keepers while traveling on my bike down to Sagamore Bridge.

As you can see from the picture, the morning was beautiful and it was a treat to be out there, even though the early morning temperature was 50 degrees. Reports indicated that the West end of the Canal was more productive.
On the other hand, a week earlier and at opposite ends of our ‘island’ two of the more experienced Salties fished Provincetown. Here is their report sent in by Jack Creighton:

The Nicholson Bros splashed at Pamet and then went to Race Pt and beyond before finding stripers. Tons of sand eels but no macks. Finally started to pick some shorts with lavender epoxy jigs. Then we got into some '3 footers'. Total catch among 3 of us was about 20 fish with a 34” and 36” shown in the photo. The fog rolled in solid with about 100yds visibility at noon so we worked our way back home with good action and screen lit up orange just before Race Pt. Lavender epoxy ruled the day.

The May 27, 2015 Annual Cod Fish Dinner

The second Fish Supper of the year was another success. Attendance was strong and the food was as good as ever. A great time was had by all.

Congratulations to the women who were drawn as winner participants in the Bob Luce Ladies Charter. They are Fran Apiscopa, Mary Alice Cottle, Linda Kelly, Betty Misiewicz, Kathy Orlando and Liz Rosch. Good luck to all and please elect a designated photographer so we have photos of the trip for our website and newsletter!

The Supper was also an occasion to present several awards.

Seen on the right is Capt. John Greska receiving a special award for all his contributions to the club over his many years of membership. The award was hand carved by our resident artisan Ken Whiting.

Other awards included two for meritorious service. Congratulations to Richard Halvorsen and Jim Dudac. Below is Richard receiving his plaque.

Stan Dagger Scholarship Presented

The Salties were proud to present the $1000. Stan Dagger Scholarship to Ms. Hannah Davies, a third generation Saltie, with her parents and grandparents in attendance. She is ranked #7 in a class of 169.
At right, Hannah is presented the award by Cape Cod Salties Secretary Randall Sherman. Congratulations Hannah!

Knot Tying Workshop

Prior to the dinner, Terry Tessein conducted an instructive session on basic fishing knots, including those for braid and mono. Members stopped by to observe and a knot tying booklet was available for junior members.

The Salties Fishing Club has many talented members, some producing some unbelievable items. I have suggested, and the Board has approved, to feature members and their wares to sell at out monthly meetings.  If you tie rigs, make sinkers, lures of any type, or have any fishing items you wish to sell or produce (anything of interest) that the club members may be interested in, let me feature you at one of our meetings.  Send me an e-mail   joseph.oclair@yahoo.com  and I will set up a schedule for you.  All monies go to the vendor, and great items go to the members.

Poachers will be prosecuted

Boat captain to be charged for illegal fishing
By By Ethan Genter
May 20, 2015 - 6:56 PM
The captain of a charter boat is in hot water after his boat was stopped by the Coast Guard in Buzzards Bay on Monday with more than 100 out-of-season fish onboard.
David Botelho, the captain of the Ava May, both out of Fairhaven, will be charged with fishing for black sea bass during the closed season, possession of undersized black sea bass, and possession over the recreation limit, according to Environmental Police Capt. Patrick Moran. When the Coast Guard boarded the ship during a random safety check, they found that Botelho's masters license had expired in 2008, according to a Coast Guard spokeswoman.
Black sea bass season runs from May 23 to Aug. 27 and the recreational take in state waters is eight fish, Moran said. Fishers also are not allowed to take in fish less than 14 inches, he said. Of the Ava May’s 107 black sea bass, 19 were undersized, he said.
The seized fish were donated to a local veterans shelter in New Bedford, Moran said.
