July 2015 Newsletter
July 2015 President’s Message
As you are probably all aware, I have been out of sync for
the last three months, and Jay Pavick has done a great job keeping you up to
date on what has been going on.
At last month’s meeting, Ed Janiunas gave a very informative
talk on kayak fishing and equipment, and there was a lot of interest from the
membership.
At this time I would like to introduce a change to the
club’s bylaws under Article 8, Membership, Section one. This section presently
reads that “any person interested in the purpose of the organization and has
attained the age of 16 may become a member upon submission of an application.”
The proposed change shall read: “Any person interested in the purpose of the
organization may become a junior member upon submission of an application until
their 18th birthday. The membership fee will be waived on said
application.” I brought this change up at the June meeting, and it will be
voted on at the July meeting.
I was at Smuggler’s Beach recently and saw two of our members
in their boat being inspected by representatives of the MRIP section of NOAA.
Jay Pavick and Jay Walpole said that the survey was not very long, and they
could see its value to the fishing industry. See photos in the newsletter. It’s
great to have our membership involved in research programs.
Along the same subject – research of the fishery – I know
Ken Whiting and Bruce MacLeod, at the minimum, have been sending in many scale
samples to the state. If any other members have submitted scales, please send
me a quick email. This data will be important in future fishery regulations.
I know it has been awhile since the last fish supper, but
just to let everyone know, it was the largest crowd we have had to date. And
although I am not a big fish eater myself, all the reports are that it was the
best supper ever. Great job to all our volunteers in the kitchen! Hope to see
you all at the October supper.
This month we have two big events -- the July 17 fluke trip
and the July 18 Fishing Festival. Ken Whiting has done a great job getting the
number needed for the fluke trip – again note that it has been changed from
Thursday to Friday of this week. Ed Wagner has done a super job organizing the
Fishing Festival on July 18 at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum. We hope to have a
big turnout of the membership! Check your town newspaper and read Ed’s article
in the sports section!
Notice my new closing statement!
Thanks, and hold tight!
Jack (jecreighton45@gmail.com, 508 394-2983)
P.S. Hope to see you Friday and Saturday!
July 2015 News and Information
First Keeper (no two)
Thursday June 25th 2015 I participated in the derby aboard the Striper, which is out off Saquatucket Harbor in Harwich Port, MA. The morning was cool, due to the colder than normal water temperature, and calm. My fishing partners for this trip were Terry, Kent, John, Bruce, and Joe. The group, knowing that I was a novice, ‘informed’ me that the fishing shorts I was wearing were not allowed on the boat for safety reasons. Knowing that I had an extra pair of long pants in my backpack, I started digging for them when I was greeted with a round of laughing from the group (I knew I had been had). The boat left the dock at about 5AM and the good humor and the fishing advice continued. Soon, Captain Jim had us trolling and jigging shoal areas in Nantucket Sound. When it was my turn in the rotation, Billy (mate extraordinaire) provided last minute guidance (thanks Billy!). The thrill of the first strike will always be remembered. At the end of the day, I had caught my first and second keeper Bass.
One, being 29”, was kept for the grill and the second at 35 ½” was released. A total of five bass were kept by the team, while releasing at least that many more. On the left is Jay with his second ever keeper. Several large Bluefish topped off the event that this Cape Cod Saltie would not soon forget.
June Workshop
At June’s meeting, Terry Tessein used an email sent to
him by a new member that had some good questions, which became the subject for the most recent educational segment. Replacement hooks for lures, hook sizes and types
were discussed. His presentation encouraged changing
hooks on metal lures to singles, he has success with Siwash and VMC hooks
The new member also asked about lures that best
resembled an eel or sand eel. There were a number of suggestions offered
including the Tsunami Sand Eel and the Bill Hurley Lures, which are sand eel
scented. Finally, Terry went into the few basic colors for poppers,
pencil poppers and other surface plugs used during daylight hours.
Reminder - Salties Fishing Festival July 18
Ed Wagner reviewed plans for Salties Fishing
Festival at the June Salties meeting. Additional help was solicited via a
sign-up sheet circulated during the meeting. If you have a particular aspect of fishing
that you would like to help present please contact Ed Wagner at (267) 772-0057
or capekeysed@aol.com.
The Cape Cod Salties in
conjunction with the Cape Cod Maritime Museum will hold a Fishing Festival on
Saturday July 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event held on the
museum grounds on Hyannis Harbor will highlight many aspects of fishing on Cape
Cod. We would like to highlight the angling talents of our members.
To date we have:
- Ryan Collins will be demonstrating his website "My Fishing Cap Cod: and answering fishing quesitons.
- Lou MacKeil will be discussing his "Take a Course, Catch a Fish" class.
- Wood Carvers, Ken Whiting and June Noll will demonstrate their carving techniques and have some work available for sale.
- Robert Davies of "Custom Wood Lures" will discuss his process and explain how to use various lures.
- Ed Janiunas will explain Kayak Fishing and have his fishing rigged kayak on hand for review.
Fisherman's Market Scheduled for July's Salties Meeting
On July 22 , our next meeting date Bob Davies of
Custom Wood Lures has agreed to present his lures to the club for sale.
Bob is one of the top custom plug builders on Cape Cod. It is often
said that his plugs should be framed and admired, rather than feed them to a
Blue fish. Bob's
plugs are perfectly balanced, which insure more hook-ups and bigger fish.
Every fisherman should have one or two of these plugs in their tackle box.
One of the members asked if these jigs
really catch fish? A picture is worth a thousand words.
Kayak Fishing Program Presented ant June Meeting
The Main Program was presented by member Ed
Janiunas on Kayak Fishing using his fully equipped 15’ Ocean Kayak to demo and
discuss all of the safety and fishing equipment choices available. Ed
stressed safety (PFD’s are a must) and covered topics such as paddle power,
electric motor power, anchor options, GPS, Fish Finders and fish landing
techniques. Ed is organizing a Kayak Fishing group for the Cape Cod Salties;
and as of this writing an info gathering note has been sent to those interested
member who signed up for the group at the June meeting.
Below is the fully ‘rigged’ Kayak.
Ed can be reached at ejaniunas@gmail.com 917-797-7594 for members
