May 2015 News and Info

Early Herring Check

Low tide at the Bournedale Herring Run (Photo left) on April 28 saw no herring yet in the cold waters of the Canal.  However, a calm pool at the

Paines Creek Herring Run (Photo right) shows a crowd of fish resting before their climb to Mill Pond. It won’t be long now before the Stripers show next. Remember to practice and promote ‘Catch and Release’ as much as you can to help preserve the bass population.

Jig Tying Seminar

Thanks to Terry Tessein and Joe O’Clair for coordinating the Jig Tying Seminar on Saturday April 18. Joe (shown here when he was handsome)

demonstrated the know-how’s for tying several different jig patterns to an enthusiastic group of about 12 Salties members. Materials, thread type, knot tying, equipment, and Jig architecture were all demonstrated.
The Parachute jig was a favorite as far as looks, and reputation.

We also met Mike Hunter, a Salties member, at the Seminar who fabricates quality artisan jig heads, which are available by looking Mike up at a regular meeting. Thanks again Terry and Joe for the education, anecdotes, and, of course, the donuts.

April Speaker – Ryan Collins

Website Developer and Cape Cod Fisherman Ryan Collins gave a well-received presentation centered about the exciting fishing-centric motivators that help get anglers going each spring. Ryan reminded us about the many fishing spots available to us around the Cape, the pursuit of early stripers and trout, the first trips to the Canal, Kayak fishing, the first run of Bluefish, fishing the flats, and getting the power boat in the water after its winterization.

Ryan ended his talk with an invitation to a fund-raising breakfast for the last weekend in April. Funds going to a children’s organization “A Baby center”, which is a  Cape Cod nonprofit specializing in helping Cape babies and families who need a little assistance. Check out his website.

Fisherman’s Market Proposed
By Joe O’Clair

The Salties Fishing Club has many talented members, some producing some unbelievable items. I have suggested, and the Board has approved, to feature members and their wares to sell at out monthly meetings.  If you tie rigs, make sinkers, lures of any type, or have any fishing items you wish to sell or produce (anything of interest) that the club members may be interested in, let me feature you at one of our meetings.  Send me an e-mail   joseph.oclair@yahoo.com  and I will set up a schedule for you.  All monies go to the vendor, and great items go to the members.

April Workshop
By Barry Sullivan and Randall Sherman

Terry Tessein introduced New member Capt. Jeff Viamari of adInfluencesportfishing@gmail.com from Yarmouth, who operates a 25 foot Parker, the “Bad Influence”, from a trailer in order to follow the fish.  His slide show presented a basic overview on plugs, bait, and fishing rigs that he uses and how he fishes them for the various species of fish available around the Cape.  Capt. Viamari ties all the rigs that he uses.  He went over how to tie the rigs giving the materials including terminal tackle, knots used, length of the rig and how the length should be modified based on bottom conditions, drift speed, etc.

Short Presentations at April Meeting
By Barry Sullivan and Randall Sherman

Brian Everett from the Town of Dennis Natural Resources Department requested volunteers to count herring at the town’s herring runs.  A signup sheet was passed around.  Volunteers will be contacted for training dates and signup for assignments.  Time commitments will be minimal because counting intervals are only 10 minutes.

Bob Lynch from the Center for Costal Studies made a presentation on the

Marine Animal Disentanglement Hotline and requested support from the Salties while they are on the water to report the entanglement of any whales or sea turtles in fishing or lobster gear to the hotline at 1-800-900-3622 or to the Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16.  Do not attempt to disentangle the gear and if at all possible stay in visual contact with the entangled animal to direct the disentanglement team when they arrive to the affected animal.  Decals for boats with the reporting information were made available at the meeting.
