April 2015 President’s Message
Ninety-five members attended our Annual Awards Banquet on
March 7 at the Doubletree in Hyannis. Those present appeared to have a great
time and were very happy with the location and the meal. Over twenty plaques
were given out for monthly and yearly winners. The 2014 Henderson Award winner
was Ken Whiting, for all the wonderful work he has done over the years to
benefit the Cape Cod Salties. Barry Sullivan got a special President’s Award
for serving for ten years as the membership chairman and the bylaws committee
chair. Rick Enz won a $100 gift
certificate to the tackle shop of his choice for submitting the winning entry
in our in-house derby. Kent Dumont won the $100 door prize and re-donated it to
the club. Steve Israelian and Joe O’Clair did a great job setting up the meal
and being our contacts with Doubletree for the second year.
For the first time we sent out a six-question survey on the
banquet. We received 24 returns, mostly representing couples, so that was
almost a 50% return on the surveys. Here is a quick summary. Question one was
on location, with twenty-one of twenty-four rating it a 5 (highest). Sixteen of
the twenty-four gave the date selection a 5. On question three, the quality of
the meal, fifteen gave a 5 and eight gave a 4. On the wait staff, twelve gave a
5 and eleven gave a 4. On the quality of the buckets, eight gave a 5, and
thirteen gave a 4. On the silent auction items, fifteen gave a 5 and nine gave
a 4. Again, to get almost a 50% return gives us a true barometer of the attendees’
feelings.
The September One-Day Derby has two new co-chairmen, Terry
Tessein and Bill Dulude. The application is under the 2015 Events tab on our
webpage. Get those applications in so Bill and Terry can plan for a great day!
With the recent Awards Banquet and the April Wives &
Sweethearts Appreciation Dinner, the club distributed many gift certificates.
Please use these certificates as soon as possible, and take a minute to thank
the providers for their generosity. That might make it easier for us to continue
to get these gift certificates!
On Tuesday, March 24, Ken Whiting, Bull Dulude, Bill Cottle,
and I attended the Rhode Island Surfcasters Symposium in Warwick. The upcoming
RI Surfcasters newsletter, which we always post on our webpage, will explain
the day’s discussion. It revolved around what is referred to as ecosystem based
management, and there was much discussion on everything from silt runoff to
seals. Be sure to read the newsletter.
You should be getting some sort of request in the next several
weeks on the Yarmouth and Dennis herring run cleanups. We will email the info
as soon as we get it.
Randall Sherman stepped up and ran an excellent meeting in
March when Joe Gianetti and I were unable to attend. Our planned speaker, Chris
Kokorda was ill, but Kim Trull from the Division of Marine Fisheries explained
the scale program, encompassing striped bass, black sea bass, fluke, and scup.
Kim explained the importance of the scale program to the marine fisheries. The
good news is that twelve members signed up for the program. With any kind of
luck, we will submit hundreds of scale samples. Anyone still interested can see
me at the next meeting or contact Kim at kimberly.trull@state.ma.us.
In closing, all the Atlantic seaboard states except for New
Jersey supported the concept of one striped bass at 28”. New Jersey stayed with
two. This should have a positive impact on both the striped bass and on our
encouragement to be involved in the catch and release program.
The water temperature is 37-38 degrees. We need a week of
good sun to jump it up. Joe Apiscopa recently caught a few trout down in
Nickerson Park, so the fish are eating.
Thanks, and
hook ‘em up!

April 2015 News and
Info
Early
Fishing Experiences Discussion
At the March meeting, a member discussion centered on Spring Fishing
experiences, led to several tips on locations to try as the April snow finally
disappears. One tip was Winter Flounder fishing at Sesuit Harbor. Shown
at the left, taken at low tide, we see no snow at the Harbor along with blue sky.
Looks good enough for a try.

Charities. There will also be used boats in the parking lot.
Wives and

for our significant others was high at the Yarmouth House Restaurant on April

New
Member has Charter Business
A new Member
was introduced at the March meeting, Captain Jeff Viamari of BadInfluencesportfishing@gmail.com from
Yarmouth. He operates a 25 foot Parker, the “Bad Influence”, from a trailer in
order to follow the fish. He also donated a trip to this year’s Awards Banquet
(Thanks Jeff!). He can be reached at the e-mail above.
Fish Aging Protocols Presentation
Kimberly Trull, from the Mass
Division of Marine Fisheries Age and Gowth Lab presented the status and purpose
of her data collection program and requested help in the form of gathering fish
scales from Striped Bass, Sea Bass, Fluke, and Scup.
The
Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries Age and Growth Lab was established
and constructed in 2009. The main goal of the lab is to provide age data of
recreationally important fish species for use in stock assessments and
fisheries management. Age data are important as they are needed to calculate
growth rates, determine age of recruitment, determine age of maturity, track cohorts
of fish, and calculate mortality estimates.
