March 2015 President’s
Message
At the
February meeting we had Jesse Mechling from the Center of Coastal Studies in
P-town giving us an overview of their organization’s mission and talking about
the number of whales in and around Cape Cod Bay. Kimberly Trull from the MA
Division of Marine Fisheries will speak to us in March regarding the sport fish
angler data collection, specifically targeting sea bass, scup, fluke, and
striped bass. Our main speaker this month will be Chris Kokorda talking about
fly-fishing the Cape.
Last month I
told you I had recently visited Tony Stetzko and now, as most of you know, Tony
passed away on February 26, from complications of pneumonia. One of the things
that we will do in-house immediately to honor this great guy is name the award
for the largest striped bass caught from shore in our in-house derby “The Anton
“Tony” Stetzko Award.
As you are
reading this newsletter, the Awards Banquet for 2014 is over, and the next big
event prior to the real start of the fishing season is the Wives &
Sweethearts Appreciation Dinner on Friday, April 3 at the Yarmouth House. The
application is under the Events tab on our website and also right below this
newsletter. Vinny Foti and Steve Unsworth started this event with the sincere
goal of honoring their significant others prior to the inconveniences of the
fishing season. It has always been a fun night, and we hope to see you there.
During the
last weekend of February, the RI Surfcasters held their annual show in
Providence. There was a strong showing of Salties there, with at least 30 of us
walking the aisles. Saltie Bill Cottle won a charter trip at one of the show’s
booths, so it shows that it’s always a good idea to submit your name. It was
also great to see the number of tackle shop owners from the Cape and Islands
having such a strong presence.
The MA
Division of Marine Fisheries voted to have one striped bass at 28” be the
rule for
2015, and that includes charter boats. It was great to see Massachusetts set an
example, and although it’s not a final vote, it looks like Rhode Island is
going to go one bass at 28” recreational and two bass on charter boats.
Massachusetts also voted to reduce the poundage on commercial striped bass,
although it remains to be seen whether this will have the desired impact we are
looking for regarding striped bass. At least it is a positive first step in the
process.
Upcoming
March events include the Salties meeting on March 25 and the MA Striped Bass
Annual Sport Fishing Expo in Hanover, MA on March 28-29. Looking ahead to
April, we have the Sixth Annual Fishermen’s Yard Sale at the Moose Lodge in
Yarmouth on April 18, from 8:30-4:00. Our own Bob Davies will have a booth at
each show, so we sure to stop by.
Thanks, and
hook ‘em up!

March 2015 News and
Info
Spring is
just a few weeks away
You
would never know It though by looking at this recent picture of Barnstable Harbor at
Scudder’s Lane.
Salt Water activities including Striped Bass Fishing, Clamming, and Oystering are still ways off. Maybe the warmth of our past
memories will help thaw the beaches.

Education chairman Terry Tessein presented tips on off season reel maintenance, stressing its importance and demonstrating technique with spinning and bait casting hardware.
Terry also recommended two websites for guidance and parts: ‘ereplacementparts.com’
and ‘reelschematics.com’. Check with
Terry for any problems with access.
In addition, the book “Striper Pursuit” by John Skinner was suggested
as an excellent reference for Surf Fishing beyond the basics. Skinner’s
book is enhanced by videos on this companion website.

February
Speaker
Jesse
Mechling, representing the Center for Coastal Studies of Provincetown, gave us
an excellent overview of the varied programs in progress.
He is the Marine Educator for this group that
has been doing research and education about our marine environment for 38
years. Their website ‘coastalstudies.org’ has info posted on their many
projects.
A list of which includes:
- Humpback Whale, Right Whale, Marine Fisheries, and Seal Research
- Whale Rescue
- Marine Education
- Cape Cod Bay Monitoring
- Marine Policy Initiative and Marine Geology
- Stellwagen Bank marine Sanctuary
Of particular interest was the fact that their
organization developed the first whale entanglement rescue program in 1984; and
have been doing this as well as educating other teams from all over the
world. For any marine animal entanglement,
all members are encouraged to call 1-800-900-3622, report location, stay in
area if possible until the team arrives. Our secretary, Randy Sherman, has
hotline stickers for any member with a boat.
2015 Annual Awards Banquet
A great time was had by all of the almost one hundred Banquet goers on Saturday March 7 at the Double Tree Hilton in Hyannis.
The food was tasty and plentiful; and the Raffle/Auction Prizes were
exceptional. A wall of Buckets loaded with lures, gift cards, and fishing gadgets was
available to the hopeful ticket holders. Auction items ranged from art,
jewelry, backpacks, charters with Salties and Commercial Captains, fishing
rods, fishing reels, wood carvings, a private chef-cooked dinner, and even a mounted
Striped Bass.
I probably forgot some of the items; but I won’t forget the trips I will be on with Terry Tessein, Lou MacKeil, Jay Walpole, and Fly casting lessons with Bill Cottle. For this New Member, a night of meeting new friends and talking with the local fishing gurus will long be remembered. Thank you to Jack and his committee for a well-organized event that also included a warm welcome for new Salties members.
