February 2015
President’s Message
For two
years in a row, snow cancellations have started the year off with a bang!
However, on January 14, eighteen Salties attended a meeting at the Mass
Maritime Academy regarding the striped bass issue and five other topics. It was
a great representation of fishery issues for our club. It appears that
Massachusetts is going to go with one striped bass at 28 inches, and it seems
the majority of the eastern seaboard states are going to do the same thing,
with a few exceptions. No matter what, this will have to have a positive
influence on the striped bass. I really thank those club members for making
that trip.
I know I
seem to badger you around this time of year for dues and the
banquet/fundraiser, but those monies are very important in supporting our
donations. For example, over the past year, we gave $500 to the Needy Fund,
$350 to the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, and $1000 to Nature
Conservancy (white shark), among others. Our expenses are also covered,
including $650 for the Senior Center lease and $100 to build the storage cage
in the Senior Center basement.
So, if you
are in a position to come to the Awards Banquet on March 7, please do! You can
also make a donation to our plug bucket, which will be at the February meeting.
Captain Jim Luce has donated another women’s fishing trip for six sometime in
June. Several other trips will be available, including kayak fishing with Ed
Janiunas, fishing the canal with Steve Davies, and surf fishing Provincetown
with Terry Tessein. If you google Saltwater
Fisherman, July 1974, you will see a
great article with photos of Terry fishing P-Town stripers.
Other
non-fishing donations are welcome. For example, Jay Pavick’s wife Johanna has
made a lovely 99% silver necklace for our silent auction tables.
In closing,
on March 29 from 4-8 in Eastham, there will be a benefit for Tony Stetzko. More
details to follow!
Thanks, and
hook ‘em up!

Low-rider Rod Guides and Reel
Maintenance
Education chairman Terry Tessein sent along
this information on his next workshop:
At the last meeting there was a handout about low-rider
guides on rods. I have used St Croix rods with theses guides for several
years and I will relate my experience with them. Also, now is the time to
do reel maintenance. If you are inclined to do your own reel maintenance
or thinking about it I have some online sources plus low maintenance tips for
those reels not having tear down/part replacement work.
