President’s Message
Our December speaker, Mary Taylor from the Cape Cod Maritime Museum at
135 South St., Hyannis, was very informative and was willing to co-host one of
our Learn to Fish Days. This would be a great chance for us to start our
satellite Learn to Fish Days!
DUES! DUES! DUES! DUES! DUES! DUES! DUES!
Please fill out the dues application (under the Newsletter Menu on our
website) and send your check for $30.00 to Cape Cod Salties, PO Box 1183, South
Dennis, MA 02660-1183. Let’s do this as soon as possible to make it easier for
our volunteer chair people!! We still have some five-year memberships
available, to be sold until 50 are gone. It is five years from the date you
send in the application.
AWARDS BANQUET! AWARDS BANQUET! AWARDS BANQUET!
The Annual Awards Banquet is on March 7 at the Doubletree by Hilton on
Route 28 in Hyannis -- $30 a person and
$60 a couple. We still have several openings for the first 25 to respond and
win a prize!! In addition to being our awards banquet, this is also the club’s
biggest fundraiser of the year. You do not have to be winning a prize to attend
the banquet. In fact, most of us will not be winning but will be there to
congratulate our fellow Salties. As in past years, it is requested that you
consider seeking gift certificates or prizes from businesses with whom you have
a close relationship. All members should appreciate that, so we can continue to
fund our scholarships and all the other charitable donations that we make.
At the December meeting, I spoke about the Center for Coastal Studies
Winter Lecture Series to be held at Napi’s Restaurant in Provincetown. Napi’s
has a 5:00 p.m. special early bird dinner, and the lectures start at 7:00 p.m.
The Wednesday series starts January 28, Feb. 25, March 25, and May 27.
Obviously these dates conflict with Salties meetings, but the January meeting
is on Microscopic Phytoplankton, and we are hoping to send someone from the
Board of Directors to this important lecture.
We knew that we might have to address the striped bass issue again. We
are asking for as many Salties as possible to attend a Wednesday, January 14
public hearing at 6:00 p.m. at the Mass Maritime Academy, Admirals Hall, 101
Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay. Although we had mostly agreed that we would limit
the recreational take on striped bass to one fish at 28”, six pack boats up and
down the Atlantic seaboard are now lobbying hard for two fish per person on
their boats. I cannot speak for anyone else. However, even though I can only
take one fish on a charter boat, neither I nor the people with whom I fish
regularly, will reduce the number of trips we take, so we will continue to
support the charter boats captains in the same way we always have. Every honest
fisherperson knows that striped bass are in trouble. Let us do the right thing
by trying to fix this fishery now.
In closing, I am pleased to announce that longtime Saltie Ken Whiting,
one of our famous in-house carvers and painters, won the Cool Fish Photo
Contest sponsored by Anglers Artistry for his 65 pound codfish!!
Congratulations, Ken!
Thanks, and
hook ‘em up!
