OCTOBER 2018 President’s Message

Hello, Fisherpeople!

The MV Derby is over, so you are stuck with listening to me again. First, a quick report on the derby. Saltie Joe Holey had a great derby and was ranked in the top ten with a grand slam. That means he registered a bass, bluefish, false albacore, and a bonito, all of which placed. Congrats, Joe, on a great effort! My partner in the team competition, Bob Dunn, got an 11.42 lb. false albacore and won first place in the Senior Division. Jay Pavick came over for a few days and got a silver pin for second place on a daily striped bass. He also won $15 for that fish. The last I knew, Bob Dunn and I, as Team Salties, were 25th. This year there were over 3,500 registered fisherpeople. The best I did was a 10.48 lb. false albacore.
For those of you who missed it, we have registered the Cape Cod Salties Foundation, Inc. under the Amazon Smile program to raise money for the foundation, which consists of the Reef Project and scholarships, among other things. Any time you order from Amazon, they will donate a portion of your purchase to our foundation. The donations are small, but they will add up. Just go to smile.amazon.com and select the Cape Cod Salties Foundation, Inc. as your charity. If each of us could get ten family or friends located anywhere in the world to buy on Amazon and select the Cape Cod Salties Foundation, Inc., it will be of no cost to the shopper and will benefit the foundation greatly. Let’s make “Let’s Get Ten!” our battle cry as we head into the holiday shopping season.
Another suggestion to raise money for the foundation is to sell an object for which you no longer have use for through the Cape Cod Times, e-Bay, Cape Cod Virtual Yard Sale, or any medium. If you have already sold something, please bring your money to the Fish Supper or send it to P.O. Box 1183, South Dennis, MA 02660.
Last call for the October Fish Super! You can go to capecodsalties.org and print out an application under Events. You have to get it in ASAP. Hope to see everyone there! We would like to get at least 100!

October Meeting Speaker

There will be no speaker this meeting, everyone will be too busy eating and talking with friends during the annual Fish Dinner

September Meeting

At September's meeting President Jack Creighton was not in attendance as he on Martha's Vineyard participating in the annual derby. Vice President Randall Sherman stepped up to fill his shoes for this meeting. First thing I wanted to do was to make a correction, in last month's newsletter I misheard the name of the family that was nice enough to donate all of that fantastic fishing gear to the foundation. It was the Allenbrook family that made that thoughtful donation.
Bill Cottle gave his report on the year-long derby. While there were some impressive fish reported this year you still have time to enter one for yourself.
Also there was a new member in attendance, Chuck Talbot of Yarmouthport. If any of you meet him at this month's fish dinner make sure you make him feel welcome.

Cape Cod Canal Clean Up

On Saturday September 29th we could not of asked for better weather to have the Canal Clean Up. We started the day with some coffee and donuts then went to work. It was amazing to see how we were doing something good for the environment and getting thanked by fellow fisher people and passerby's at the same time. After the cleaning was done we all met back for some of Ed Burke's sausage and peppers with a cold drink, I tell you that was worth the price of admission right there. I don't know if I keep doing this event for the good of it or for the food!! Lastly let's thank Bill Cottle for putting this whole thing together.

FUNDRIASER SALE AT MEETING:
During the September's meeting the donated plugs were all cleaned up and displayed for sale. Only some of the plugs were purchased and $95.00 went to the foundation. There are still a lot of nice plugs left so bring your wallets to the next meeting.
These are just some of the items left:

Some Sebile plugs
Orca Plugs
Bombers and Yozuri plugs
Needlefish plugs
Poppers
Metal lip plugs
Multiple sizes and quantities of soft plastics, many with the jig heads

It was approved at the September's meeting by the membership to give the go ahead to Curley Direct of South Yarmouth to start their direct mail, social media and "Go Fund Me" campaign on behalf of the Cape Cod Salties Foundation. Needless to say there is a lot of optimism as to the benefit this can bring to the reef project.
The U.S. Coast Guard had some great news as they let us know that they have a bunch of old buoy anchors that they would like to contribute to the reef. Another bit of good news was that the U.S. Coast Guard will handle getting the materials to the reef.
Chairman Randall Sherman also reported that after speaking with Mark Rousseau of the Division of Marine Fisheries he was very optimistic about a large grant from the Federal Fisheries and Wildlife Mitigation Fund. This grant would go a long way to covering the expense of the deployment as well as the expenses for monitoring etc. If all goes well we will get news in the beginning of the New Year.

August Speaker

At the September meeting Joe Tierney, the general Manager of the Bass River Marina was nice enough to come over and speak to us. He told how the marina started back in 1958 as just a shack with a handful of slips. We learned of its progress through the years to become what it is today and what it looks to be in future. Joe is new to Bass River Marina but he is far from new to the area as he grew up on Bass River. Joe gave us a great run down of all of the marinas services as well as the exciting lines of boats available there.

October Meeting is the Fish Dinner!!

The October meeting will be here before you know it and you do not want to miss the spread these people put out for the annual fish dinner. Please get your paperwork in as soon as possible so we can get an accurate head count. It would be a travesty if we did not have enough to go around.

Salties Fish Tales

Ken Whiting fished on the Helen H for a fish filled, three day adventure.

The catch was anything but typical with eight swordfish hooked and four landed.There were 3 longfin albacore tuna caught and 3 yellowfin tuna caught. There were also 2 wahoo caught which brings me to my catch, which was a big wahoo weighing at 72 lbs. It will be entered into the MA. State Division of Marine Fisheries Saltwater Derby.
