March 2018 Newsletter

March 2018 President's Message

Hello, Fisherpeople!

As I recently emailed, the Annual Banquet has been moved to April 7. We hope more of you can take advantage of the date change. On our updated events page at capecodsalties.org, you have access to applications for the Annual Banquet, the Haddock Trip, the Wives & Sweethearts Dinner, the Two-Day In-House Derby, and the Fluke Trip.

Randall Sherman has informed the Board of Directors that our 501©4 application has been submitted to the state, and the foundation grant has been submitted to the feds. Randall has done a lot of great work on this, and we thank him very much. The first and most obvious benefit will be to the Yarmouth Tire Reef.

Speaking of conservation issues, on March 13 and again on March 24. We will be looking for volunteers to help with clearing the stream from Swan Pond to Long Pond in Yarmouth. We will meet both days at 9AM at the entrance to Swan Pond Village on Forest Road. Waders, rakes, and clippers are required.

Bill Cottle told us at the last meeting that the annual Earth Day Cleanup of the Cape Cod Canal is scheduled for April 21. At the next meeting, we will be signing up volunteers to help with this project. Many other organizations participate, and a large crowd from us would be good. Our own annual canal cleanup is on September 29, so put that on your calendar. We will remind you again before the event.

Saltie Tom Planert is involved in an eight-month project, one day a month, using kayaks to take debris from the waters on different ponds. On March 25, Spectacle Pond in Sandwich is the first target. The April 29 pond is Wequaquet in Barnstable. The third one, May13,is Herring River in Harwich. Any kayakers who would be willing to assist Tom with his project could meet at these locations around 8:45AM on the dates listed.

At our most recent meetings we have discussed having sub-groups that spend a certain amount of time on an individual fishing concept. Bill Cottle and his fly-tying group is embarrassing the rest of us with the number of people participating. I know it is hard at this time of year for Lou MacKeil to get a group to meet on fishing West Dennis Beach in May for bluefish, but in all likelihood, that will be our next large contingent of involvement by members. If we can ever get Bruce MacLeod, a.k.a. Chopper 41, to come back from Florida, we can get him to get his shell fishing group involved in securing these mollusks.

Recently a carful of us went to the RI Fishing Show, and on the way down, there was much talk about fishing the Cape Cod Canal. It’s funny how a month like July 2017 can make non-canal fisherpeople think they should become canal rats. What to remember, as far as I’m concerned, is the mackerel were a big draw, and to get into the canal, the bass have to come from Buzzards Bay or Cape Cod Bay. So, fishing outside or to the right or left of either entry should produce fish on a regular basis.

As I write this message, we only have five spots left for the haddock trip, and that’s over a month and a half away, so that’s a good thing. It shows great interest by the club. As I receive the checks, I write the date of the check receipt, and this determines who gets the last five slots.

I would love to get six more couples to attend the Annual Banquet. If I do nothing else in my last few months as your president, it will be to try to get more camaraderie and socialization among the members.

Thanks, and hold tight!

Book Report Suggestion
Last month we didn't get any book reports but if you have read something interesting that you thing the rest of the club would benefit as well please let us know.
Also if you have a good recipe that would work too.

February Meeting Speaker

Last month we were lucky to have Captain Bruce Peters of Capeshores Charters come talk to us on Fishing the Monomoy Rips. He shared some fish stories with us, gave a great slide presentation on where he fishes and some of his customers catches. He also stressed when fishing the Monomoy Rip the importance of not only knowing the times of the tides but also the heights. With out the proper knowledge an inexperienced boater can find themselves in trouble on some of those rips.
