February 2016 Newsletter

February 2016 President's Message

Our February meeting will be on the 24th, and the speaker will be Capt. Colin Lundholm on fishing for striped bass.

The last time I wrote, some of us were headed to a hearing at MA Maritime Academy regarding the status of fluke, sea bass, and scup. As of this writing, there will be no change to scup or fluke, but there is a possibility of a 25 % reduction in sea bass. We won’t know till the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission makes their next vote.

Last month I also listed dates to remember. I forgot to include the New and Used Tackle One-Day Sale on April 16, 8:30-2:30, at the Riverway Restaurant in South Yarmouth. Saltie Garry Brown is running this sale.

Prizes have started to come in for the Annual Awards Banquet, including a stuffed grouse lamp from Wayne & Barbara Miller, handmade fish placemats from Tony & Barbara Finnerty, and a fish finder and depth finder from Martin & Jane Schiff. We also have a beautiful hand-carved menhaden crafted and donated by Ken Whiting.

At the last meeting I acknowledged Richard Halvorsen as a six-gallon donator of blood to Cape Cod Healthcare but forgot to also mention Tony Finnerty as a five-gallon donor. Some of us need the blood for our various operations, and we applaud these men for taking the time to go and donate.

If you don’t think we recreational fishermen are important, a study done by Southwick Associates in 2011 shows the following for Massachusetts:
  • There were 646,691 recreational anglers.
  • Jobs related to recreational anglers totaled 6,193.
  • Retail sales related totaled $398,612,314.
  • State and local taxes associated to recreational fishing were $47,303,122.

The fluke trip is set for July 21. Mark your calendars! The first fifty to sign up will get to go.

If you have not had a chance to send in your dues or your check for the Awards Banquet, please do so at your earliest convenience.

Upcoming dates to remember:
  •  RI Surfcasters Fishing Show in Providence -- Feb. 26-28
  • Annual Awards Banquet at the Doubletree --March 12
  • MA Striped Bass Association’s Annual Sport Fishing Expo in Hanover – April 2 & 3
  • New and Used Tackle One-Day Sale at the Riverway -- April 16
  • Annual Wives and Sweethearts Dinner at the Yarmouth House – May 14
  • First Fish Supper Meeting of the year – May 25
  • Annual Fluke Trip -- July 21

Thanks, and hold tight!

January Meeting Speaker

Dex Chadsey - Fly Fishing on Cape Cod

My Fishing Cape Cod (MFCC) member, Dex Chadsey, has been fishing on Cape Cod since 1063. Dex is excited to initiate the new fly fishing section on MFCC. He will retire this June after 40 years as a teacher in 'Waylan MA.

Dex gave an informative narration with a two-fold aim. He wanted to demonstrate that adding a second skill set (fly fishing for Stripers) to the Salties, who are die hard Spin Fisher people, by introducing the basics of Fly Fishing on Cape Cod. Topics covered in his Salt Water Fly Fishing 101 included:
How to Cast - Dex demonstrated stance, thumb and wrist control, and elbow position. "Cast the line not the fly"

Rods - Including rod weights and manufacturers.

Reels - Arbor size, drags, and reel choices were highlighted along with line options, categories, and  and uses.
Accessories - Waders, Stipping Baskets, and favorite Flies used on the Cape were reviewed.

Dex wrapped up the tutorial with general descriptions of areas to fish on Cape Cod. Familiar locations such as the Herring Run, Salt Ponds, and Outflows, all were demonstrated via slides; and he concluded with an invitation to add this 'new' skill set to our tool set for catching fish on Cape Cod.
