December 2015 Newsletter
December 2015 President’s Message
The weather makes us think that we could go fishing on a daily basis, but we know that most of the striped bass and bluefish have already gone south. Let’s hope that May brings the same weather we are experiencing now. The election of officers will be held at the December meeting. All positions are open, so if you are interested in any of the seats, contact Barry Sullivan, Bruce MacLeod, or George Ford. For most club members, dues are now due! Please make the job of membership chairman easier by getting them in as soon as possible. Paul Stankus is giving up this position at the end of this year, so anyone interested in helping out should let me know. Our Annual Banquet is scheduled for March 12 at the Doubletree in Hyannis, and this year’s Wives and Sweethearts on May 7 will again be at the Yarmouth House on Rte. 28 in West Yarmouth. I hope everyone has a great year! It is your club – support it in any way you can. Thanks, and hold tight!Jack (jecreighton45@gmail.com, 508 394-2983)

Committee Positions Procedural Documentation - Jack Creighton proposed that the club documents each of the Committee positions and procedures (eg: Fish Supper, Canal Cleanup, Awards Banquet, etc) in order that consistency and a communications path are enhanced as chairpeople change from year to year. He will call a meeting on this subject in the future.

November Speaker
Marine Fiheries Biologist and Shark Researcher, John Chisholm
ran into overtime as he enthusiastically shared with the club the latest efforts and project status of the Massachusetts Shark
Research Program. John took us back to the beginnings of the program in 2009 when only five sharks were tagged. One of those tags actually re-surfaced in the Gulf of Mexico. Through the years, the team has added more sophisticated hardware. They now can set up a radio receiver and identify sharks entering or leaving monitored locations. This is especially useful; in an area such as Chatham where White Sharks can be monitored as they approach the areas containing beaches. John also updated us Salty, a White Shark named after the Cape Cod Salties as a result of one of our past donations to the White Shark Conservancy.Salty was reported in the Cape area during the 2015 season; The program's objectives for the future include
- Expanding the catch and release efforts (costly; but add a significant amount of collected information)
- Continue the population study
- Add real time receivers
- Continue outreach and education efforts
