October 2015 News and Information
2015 Canal Cleanup
About fifteen hardy fisherman met
at Midway Recreation Center on the Cape Cod Canal. Temperatures were in the fifties
and the wind was gusting well over twenty miles per hour. Chairman Bill Cottle
led the group by forming several teams.
In preparation, the teams tried to
warm up a bit with coffee and donuts. After a safety session conducted by the
park ranger, each team set out to assigned locations on the canal ‘armed’ with
mechanical grabbers, gloves, and trash bags. The teams braved the North winds and
courageously ‘swept’ the canal bikeway perimeters. The park
ranger warned us not to go on the rip-rap due to slippery conditions which were
a result of the recent storm.
Surprisingly, the crew was met with other brave souls while performing
their cleanup task. Fisherman, joggers, walkers, and the canal tour boat, all
greeted the Salties on this blustery
hunger for the
weary group as they finished up around 11:30AM. A hot lunch, consisting of
gourmet burgers and hot-dogs, enhanced by a Special Sauce (recipe a secret), were
provided by our chef Joe O’Clair and his cook assistants Barry Sullivan and
Steve Israelian. With a satisfaction for an environmental job well done in the good
company of friends, the Salties were ready to leave the 2015 Canal Cleanup and head
for home.
Many thanks to Chairman Bill Cottle for his leadership!
Terry Tessein gave the Salties a tip on how to construct a handy fish towel.
Using an ordinary grommet tool, a shower grommet, and shower hanger (all of which can be purchased in a hardware store), a fishing towel that attaches to a tackle box or plug bag can be put together. The finished product won’t rust and is at hand when needed.
Tackle Maintenance Presented at September Meeting
Tom Goodrow,
Rod and Reel repair chief at Goose Hummock Shop in Orleans, was the guest speaker
at the September Cape Cod Salties Meeting. Tom’s topic of Rod and Reel
Maintenance was enthusiastically and sometimes theatrically presented. He took
us through the anatomy of a reel and the requirements for lubrication and parts
replacement for all of its components. Corrosion, due to equipment not being
maintained, was cited as a chief reason for failure. Another reason for failure
was over-lubrication, which can capture dirt and sand. Fishing equipment should
be serviced once a year. Delay could cause parts failure, which most certainly
is more expensive than the cost of a yearly service. For those do it
yourselfers, do not use 3 in 1 oil; but use 5W40 or Shimano Star Drag grease
instead.
Closing out his talk, Tom took us through some of the new products offered in the realm of rods and reels. The good common sense information and the sometimes humorous presentation were greatly appreciated by the
audience as witnessed by the loud and long applause Tom received.
The winners of the One Day Derby were announced at the Sesuit Café:
