October President's Message

The last president’s message was in June, and we had found some good and some not so good things to talk about as a club. Then, proving how fragile we all can be, I had a heart attack, and this is my first communication with most of you since then. I have to thank vice-president Joe Giannetti for basically running the club since early June. Joe had lots of help from board members and others. Thanks to Jay Pavick for taking over the newsletter!

In the spring the club had voted to send out letters to the editors of local newspapers regarding our position on the plight of the striped bass. At this time we advocated keeping one fish and releasing fish whenever we could. On September 2nd, in Buzzards Bay, a contingent of our club met at the MASS Maritime Academy with members from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, who will make the recommendations for next year’s fishing for stripers. The September 3rd Cape Cod Times had a photo of club members leading the charge in striper protection. This is one of the most satisfying things I have been involved in as a club member.

Most of the trips auctioned off at last year’s annual banquet were completed by our members with satisfactory results. Thanks to the captains who donated their time and to those of you who purchased these trips. Mark your calendars for March 7, 2015, when our annual banquet will be held at the Doubletree in Hyannis!

At this time I have to acknowledge Captain John Greska of the Janina for running his in-house, one-day derby for the second year. I also thank Captain Jim Luce of the Striper for taking the six women Salties on a free, half-day trip.

In the June newsletter, I had talked about your expectations of what the club should do for you. Although I guess this has been discussed over the last few months, at the October 22 meeting, we should plan on some discussion.

At our most recent board of directors meeting, one topic discussed was how to assist new members in making friends and learning how to fish if need be. It was suggested that we institute a mentoring program so that someone wanting to learn to fish from the surf would be hooked up with a shore fisherman mentor, and vice versa for someone wanting to fish from a boat. The first step to bringing this to fruition is to get a list of mentors. If you are interested in this program, please send me an email saying what kind of mentor you would like to be.

Attached is an application for the October 22 fish supper. Let’s try to break our attendance of 92, set in May for the cod supper!

Thanks, and hook ‘em up!
