December President's Message

It got colder in November, and though there were fish in the canal and some of the rivers, it was too cold for me!

The November speaker, Tom Goodrow from Goose Hummock, gave us an informative talk about rod and reel maintenance.  December’s speaker, Ron Lasko, will talk about his book A Tale of Two Rivers.

The election of officers will be at the December 18 meeting. We have a full slate of officers, but anyone interested in running can have their name put in that night. It is your club, and I hope you will be there to vote.

The Annual Awards Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, March 8 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Hyannis. The application will be at the bottom of this message. Please get your returns in in a timely fashion. In the past I had asked if you could get some sort of prizes from some of the people you do business with. To date only new member Vinny Woods and Tony & Barbara Finnerty have donated prizes. Also, you are requested to bring in a new plug or lure at the next meeting to be thrown into our lure bucket as one of the prizes.

We have two openings—one to replace Steve Israelian as the ad manager of the newsletter and the other to replace Vinny Foti and Steve Unsworth as planners of the Wives & Sweethearts Banquet. If you are interested, send me an email.

Your 2014 dues letter should go out shortly. Please make our job easier by getting the returns in as soon as possible. We have had five members step up to pay the dues for the five-year membership. It’s a great deal. and you get to save $25.00!

Also, on the dues notice, on the line regarding boat information, if you are not interested in taking out other Salties, please do not list your boat in this area. We would like the list of boat owners to just be people willing to take out other Salties.

As you know, we voted unanimously last month to send a letter to the newspapers on the striped bass issue. It’s hard for me to understand how it can be said that recreational caught fish is down by 70%, but the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission says it is not being over-fished. Yet the Commissions suggests that if the current fishing mortality rate is maintained from 2013-2017, the probability of the stock being overfished is high and increases till 2015-2016 but then declines thereafter. We and other fishing clubs in the Northeast have to monitor this closely or the striped bass will become Codfish II.

PLEASE NOTE: My email address has changed to jecreighton45@gmail.com.

Thanks, and hook ‘em up!

Jack

P.S. Be sure to note the reduced rate for Salties at the DoubleTree on the night of the banquet – reduced from $129.00 to $89.00 plus tax.
