October showed us that there
were a lot of fish around, but they never seemed to stay in the same area for
very long. The club had a lot of guys catch albies from Falmouth to Hyannis and
even in front of the Pogue Light on Martha’s Vineyard. There were big bass
located off the “green can” in Chatham two weeks ago. The scarcest fish that I
have seen this month have been bluefish, although some of the guys have been
catching them.
The Salties who participated
in the MV Derby are back home. The MacLeod Creighton team finished 30th
in the team competition. Personally, for the amount of time I put in, it was a
humbling experience not to catch any big fish. All that will do is lead to even
more determination next year.
The October meeting was the
cod supper, and Lou Mackeil and his kitchen crew did a great job, as usual.
Steve Israelian and Bruce Brady also gave a lot of assistance for the night. I
would be remiss not to mention salad masters Ron Haley and Bob Baker. Joe Swaluk
won the 50/50 raffle and then turned around and donated the money back to the
club. The 81 people in attendance appreciated this gesture almost as much as
the great supper. Our own local plug maker Robert “Bob” Davies displayed his
latest creation -- a carved fisherman casting into a carved environment with
many gears rotating on a battery. For those of you who missed it at the supper,
I asked him to bring it to the next meeting. Another Saltie with another
skill!!
It’s that time of year again
for the election of officers. If you are interested in running for any
position, please contact Barry Sullivan, Dick Powell, or Richard Halvorsen.
The On the Water banquet was held in Falmouth and carver Ken Whiting’s
38” bass was awarded to the top catch and release fisherman. Ken had a booth
there displaying a lot of his great art.
You should have gotten the
application for our new five-year membership in an email, and it will be
attached somewhere in this newsletter. The first fifty to sign up will get a
numbered ID card and save $25.00 on their membership. Plus it will save lots of
work for membership chairman Paul Stankus.
In closing, there were a
couple of articles that I hope you all read. One was by executive editor Kevin
Blinkoff in the October On the Water magazine
editorial page. The November/December On
the Water magazine has a guest opinion by Mike Spinney – “Make Striped Bass
a Gamefish.” These articles are very enlightening and informative regarding
striped bass. A final tip -- google Sports
Illustrated, Sept. 18, 1968 and read the article starting on page 76 about
our own deceased Salties Bud Henderson and Bob Luce, “Rough Day on Old Man
Shoals.”
