January 2019 President’s Message

Hello, Fisherpeople!

This is the time of year when we talk about plans for the first five or six months of the new year. To those who have paid dues, thank you for being on top of it. For those of you who have not paid, please get those dues in as soon as possible so we can get down to other business. For instance, the first event after DUES will be the April 6th Annual Banquet. This annual event held at the Doubletree in Hyannis usually has 100 members present and is our biggest fundraiser of the year. You also get the chance to talk with other members about their doings and discoveries. After the banquet comes the May 5th  Haddock Trip. This information and the applications can be found on capecodsalties.org, under Events. The first three things in your mind every morning should be, “Dues, Annual Banquet, Haddock Trip!”

Now for the good stuff. If you have not heard, in the middle of December the US House and Senate passed the Modern Fish Act. If you Google US Senate Bill S1520, you can read eight pages about the bill. Some of you might have seen a Cape Cod Times article on January 14 with the headline, “Recreational Fishing Rules to be Overhauled under New Law,” and then two days later, in the “My View” section of that paper, there was another congratulations on the fishing law overhaul. This whole overhaul was supposed to make recreational fishermen an equal partner in the fishery. But as I read the articles in fishing magazines from December and January, and as I study the law, I see references to the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association (a boating trade association) and the Marine Fish Conservation Network. Combine that with the fact that Bass Pro Shops, Coastal Conservation, and other such organizations are involved.  With everything I have seen and read, not one recreational fisherman has been interviewed.

Just a few things to ponder. The American Sportsfishing Association was a great supporter of this bill. If you Google that group (ASA), you will see many references to manufacturers again. A recent article in Fisherman Magazine by Toby Lapinski talked about slot limits for striped bass. Another article in Fisherman Magazine noted points both for and against opening the EEZ Zone at Block Island. Again, a recent RISSA Magazine article said that Maryland anglers, who have a 20” striped bass requirement, overfished their quota, taking 4.3 million pounds of striped bass in 2016. Most recently, something we were all involved in was the Fishery Council and its moves to protect Atlantic herring from mid-water trawlers. However, the change won’t go into effect for another year. So while they thought it was important to make the move, they put off enacting it for a year.

So to anyone who is a real recreational fisherman, if you want to continue to enjoy our sport, and you want your children and grandchildren to be able to enjoy it, you have to monitor what is going on. Everyone should read the Jan. 19 Cape Cod Times article regarding ground fishing and the struggles it takes to be a ground fisherman on Cape Cod (“Fisheries officials warned of lawsuits”). I hope over the next month or so, a nucleus of us can become involved in all the issues facing the fishery on the East Coast.

Remember: Dues, Annual Banquet, Haddock Trip!

Thanks, and Smile with Amazon!

December's Meeting
This month the meeting was called to order by Vice President Randall Sherman. This was the annual meeting for both the Cape Cod Salties Sportfishing Club and Foundation. At this time nominations were opened for the open positions of Secretary, Board of Director (3 year term) and President. At this time there were no nominations for President so this will be continued at the January meeting. Nominations were opened for Secretary and Joe Apiscopa was nominated. Nomination were opened for the vacated seat on the Board of Directors position Ron Rodrigues was nominated. The club thanked Steve Isrealian for serving so well in that position for 2 terms.  By a single vote by the body voted in both nominations.
The body voted on and approved two donations first was a $100.00 donation to the Association for the Preservation of Cape Cod and $200.00 donation to the Center of Coastal Studies out of Provincetown.
After many years of service to the club, Program Director Jay Walpole would like to step down. The speakers for the next 5 month are already set so if someone want to take on the challenge they will have plenty of time to learn.
April 6th will be the Annual Banquet at the Doubletree Inn in Hyannis MA. We are still looking for donations for the auctions and the raffles. When you come to the meetings remember to bring a lure for the plug bucket. This is always one of the most popular auction items.
Sunday May 5th is the Annual Haddock Trip. This trip is always a great time and also a great way to start stocking the freezer. This trip is limited to 40 people at a cost of $55.00 per person. Get your paperwork in soon as this trip is first come first serve
