June 2016 Newsletter

June 2016 President's Message

Ninety people attended the May meeting/fish supper, and the kitchen crew did another fabulous job putting out the best $5.00 supper on Cape Cod! Terry Tessein introduced speakers from the Environmental Police and NOAA, and we also had speakers from the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies on the subject of entanglements. This is the first time we have had speakers at a supper that I can recall. I personally thought it was informative. You should let me know your feelings on whether it was worthwhile. I really welcome your feedback so we know how to proceed in the future.

Earlier on that same day, a group of our members had gone out on the Capt. John and limited out on pollock and other ground fish. See Kent Dumont, John Sorcenelli, or Howard Mulhern for details.

On June 2nd, a group of us went out on the Bad Influence with Capt. Jeff Viamari, and we all got keeper bass in the 36” area, with Kenny Whiting getting a nice 39” fish.

On June 7, the Capt. Bob Luce Memorial started, and six of us caught about thirty large bluefish, with 87 year old Joe Branzetti getting the largest, at 36”, a monster fish! You can see a video of this trip and the big catch by googling.  It will take you to a Facebook page, but you do not need a Facebook account to see that one page.

Bob and Steve Davies caught some nice keeper bass in the canal, and Jay Pavick got a nice 37” fish there, too.

Jay Walpole has been sneaking out to the tire reef in Bass River and getting his catch of black sea bass, with Jay Pavick and John Sorcenelli with him. Bruce Brady and Steve Israelian got several striped bass Saturday outside of Barnstable Harbor.

Club members do get lots of information on fish that are caught in or around the Cape. All the names listed have recently caught fish and are a great resource for putting you in the right place at the right time. If you are looking to go with someone, that’s a list of names to start with. Contact other members to get on the water. The Capt. Luce In House derby goes until July 16. Ask a member to go out with you and start a group of your own.

I have to say that if you want to take advantage of the opportunity of a sunrise out of the water in the morning, the smash of a fish on a surface plug, a sea bass on a jig on the bottom, or a striped bass taking your fly, there is no better time than we are presently enjoying. When I started this column, I spoke about the May supper. These social events are a big part of the club, but for a Saltie enjoying the fishing element, this is the best time. Oh, and did I tell you that Saturday night everyone and their brother and sister were catching big bluefish on West Dennis Beach on our own Bob Davies plugs?? So, get out there and enjoy it!

If you want to get out on a trip, I highly recommend Capt. Jeff Viamari on the Bad Influence and Capt. Jim Luce on the Striper. Both are members of our club and donated trips at our Awards Banquet.

Thanks, and hold tight!

2016 Long Pond Herring Count

The Herring count ended May 26. The counts were all zero for at least a week prior to the call to end the activity by Jo Ann Muramoto, the DNR Coordinator for the event. The May observations recorded only about 57. Jo Ann will send us the mathematical model results in late August; and sent along a note thanking the team for their diligent efforts and inviting the Salties back next year. The Salties Herring Count 2016 group consisted of Bruce MacLeod, Randall Sherman, Ed Janiunas, Frank Ruel, Fred Good, Jack Creighton, Jay Pavick, Joe Apiscopa, Ken Whiting, Ken Dumont, Ray Castano, Rick Cain, and Steve Israelian.
Bass Hole Memorial

This picture was sent along by Dick Nicholson from his My Cape  Cod Facebook page. The text below is taken from that Facebook post.
"Have you ever seen this flagpole at Grey's Beach in Yarmouthport? This is one of the fishiest spots on the Bay. The pole and monument were donated by the Cape Cod Salties Sportfishing Club. I have been a member for 15 years. Louis Malcolm MacKeil Jr , a master surf fisherman sponsored me."
If anyone knows the history behind the memorial, send your comments to pavicks71@comcast.net.

PS:The Stripers should be there now.

May Meeting Speaker

No Speaker Program in May - Fish Dinner

We did have a team from the Marine Animal Entanglement Group

Everett Sacrey and Bob Lynch, Entanglement Team Members located in Provincetown, discussed their activities and commitment to this effort.
Since 1984, the Center for Coastal Studies has freed more than 200 large whales and other marine animals from life threatening entanglements, using techniques developed by Center staff. For many years, CCS was the only organization on the east coast of the United States to be federally authorized, by National Marine Fisheries Service, to disentangle large, free swimming whales, such as the humpback and the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. Over the years CCS has also disentangled other marine animals, like dolphins and porpoises, seals and sea turtles.

Monthly Meeting Workshop - Environmental Awareness

May's Discussion:

Recreational Striped Bass and Tuna Regulations

Prior to serving the Fish Dinner and as part of Terry Tessein's Environmental Discussion Series, Sgt. Kevin Clayton, Ma. Environmental Police and  Officer Kevin Swiechowcz – NOAA Marine Fisheries Services addressed recreational Striped Bass fishing and reviewed the recreational Tuna regulations. In addition, they handed out their Tuna Recreational Compliance Guide and Swordfish and Billfish Recreational Compliance Guide.
They reminded us that if we see any potentially suspicious activity that may lead to environmental regulation violations, they can be contacted at: 800-632-8075.
